Homemade Fruit Snacks
My kids LOVE fruit snacks, but one day I looked at the ingredients on the box of the 'natural' and 'organic' fruit snacks and, well, I almost spit my tea out! Sure they didn't contain artificial colors, but the amount of sugar that was in them was insane! So I thought, I can make my own! I looked at a few different recipes for inspiration, and this is the recipe that I came up with, and my kids love!
Ingredients:
-
1/2 cup Vital Proteins Grassfed Gelatin
-
1/4 cup elderberry syrup --I use my homemade.. recipe in the Health and Wellness tab.
-
1/2 cup Kombucha-- I use my homemade kombucha.. recipe in the Homemade tab.
-
1 1/4 cup cherry juice -- I've also used POM juice and the kids loved it just as much!
-
2 TBS honey or to taste
Procedure:
-
Line a baking pan with wax paper. I usually tape mine down to insure they liquid doesn't leak between the pan and the wax paper. You can also use cute candy molds so that you have shaped fruit snacks. I would just double check that its safe to pour a hot liquid into it so that plastic or rubber chemicals don't leach into your fruit snacks.
-
Measure out all ingredients and place them close to the stove for easy access.
-
Pour elderberry syrup, juice, kombucha, and honey into a sauce pan, and bring it to a simmer-- not a boil.
-
Slowly, add the gelatin powder to the mixture. Stir or whisk constantly to reduce clumping.
-
Once the gelatin is all mixed in pour the mixture into your wax paper lined baking pan (or your shape molds) and place in the freezer until it is looks and feels like a fruit snack.
-
Cut into shapes or squares, place in an airtight container and store.
